JOB TITLE: Director, Mental Health Services

SUPERVISOR: Executive Officer

RESPONSIBILITY: Provide administrative oversight to an Article 31 out-patient Mental Health Clinic in a new state of the art Comprehensive Healthcare Center located in Midtown Manhattan at New Alternatives for Children, Inc., (NAC) a social services agency. NAC promotes the resiliency and success of medically complex children, youth, and their families who are impacted by trauma, poverty, and other challenging socioeconomic circumstances through coordinated mental and medical healthcare, education, and family support services.

Working from a solutions oriented approach, the Medical Director monitors clinical performance to ensure medical services and operations are in compliance with all applicable regulatory and licensing agencies. As a member of the Senior Leadership team, the Medical Director is responsible for implementing, reviewing and developing Clinical protocols, performance objectives, productivity benchmarks, compliance measures, provider workflow planning and provider scheduling. Also, the position serves as coach/mentor/trainer to staff providers, giving guidance in best practices, troubleshooting of medical services and operations issues in priority of urgency according to NAC policy and standards. The Medical Director will also represent the Clinic at required meetings with affiliated agencies. As a licensed MD the Medical Director will also provide direct patient services in addition to their duties in administration.

DUTIES:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic assessments of children, adolescents and adults.
  • Prepare timely reports on findings of the evaluations including diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations.
  • Provide psychiatric consultation and treatment of children, adolescents and adults; including psychopharmacologic treatment and psychotherapy.
  • Coordinate and consult with community mental health providers for NAC clients, as needed.
  • Provide emergency psychiatric consultation and crisis intervention services to NAC clients in collaboration with the treatment team as needed.
  • Team consultation and clinical supervision, participation in interdisciplinary treatment planning meetings;
  • Review and sign off on initial treatment plans and treatment plan reviews. Consult with social work and medical staff on clinical case issues in multi-disciplinary team model.
  • Supervise Staff Psychiatrist/s, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Assistant Director of Mental Health Services, Associate Director of Psychological Services, ASD Program Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant.
  • Provide supervision for admission UR in determining diagnostic formulation and case disposition.
  • Participate in various administrative/clinical staff meetings to include, but not limited to, Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, Mental Health Staff Departmental meeting, Interdisciplinary Case Reviews, Program Development and Research meetings as requested.
  • Assist with planning to evaluate performance levels, quality of care/services, productivity, and future needs.
  • Recruiting and hiring of staff for the department
  • Monitor quality and appropriateness of medical care
  • Provide guidance and leadership for performance guidelines
  • Develop policies and procedures
  • Manage strategic development
  • Oversee documentation and treatment planning
  • Ensure clinical services and operations are in compliance with all applicable regulatory and licensing agencies. Assesses all matters of clinical compliance and provides timely recommendations for corrective action and quality improvement.
  • Develop relationships with local hospitals and specialty providers for referrals and for provision of inpatient care, seek out available medical resources, and secure medical access for NAC clients.
  • Provide additional assistance within and outside of clinical arena, as requested and/or as appropriate, to ensure the ongoing success of the agency.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requires M.D. Degree. Must have completed general psychiatry residency training and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship training. Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Must have NYS license and DEA registration.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Strongly prefer minimum 8 to 10 years of experience in progressively responsible administrative or management related positions within a mental healthcare environment, preferably in medically fragile, child welfare population and underserved communities.
  • Previous experience supervising providers and other clinical staff is essential, with demonstrated record of success.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus. Demonstrated awareness of, sensitivity to and responsiveness in dealing with cultural and socio-economic diversity of client population.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to staff and to build the trust and respect of patients, staff, colleagues, external contacts, and other NAC members.
  • Excellent problem solving skills required, including creativity, resourcefulness, timeliness, and technical knowledge related to analyzing and resolving clinical/administrative problems.
  • Current, relevant, and substantial knowledge of areas related to health center licensing and operations, e.g., legal/regulatory, administrative, policy, protocols, and other clinical issues, especially within a managed care environment, required

HOURS: Full Time position, Monday thru Friday

SALARY: Highly competitive salary commensurate with background and experience.
