Open Position

JLUSA seeks a driven, inspired, and energetic Community Organizer to join its “A Working Future” campaign. The Community Organizer will work with JLUSA’s dynamic team to mobilize support in communities impacted by mass incarceration. The Community Organizer will be a self-starter who helps develop local leadership and promote participation in efforts that directly challenge the myriad barriers to employment in our nation today, and combat the consequences of stigmatization for people with criminal records. This is a national effort with campaigns in six states.

The ideal candidate is an experienced organizer who has worked on grassroots, policy and/or legislative campaigns. The candidate should be committed to JLUSA’s mission, be flexible in a fast-paced environment and have worked alongside communities most impacted by mass incarceration. This is not an office job; the candidate will have significant travel, particularly in the first year. Candidate will be spending time identifying and developing leadership and allies who can support the “A Working Future” campaign in its legislative and direct-action efforts.

This position reports directly to the “A Working Future” Project Coordinator and, will work closely with members and partner organizations to eliminate barriers to employment for people with criminal records.

Responsibilities include:
· Assist Project Coordinator in the development and execution of base-building efforts and campaign member development;
· Participate in legislative landscaping in a list of targeted states, including identifying key stakeholders and policy makers;
· Lead community-based canvassing in six current target states;
· Target existing statewide JLUSA members and LwC fellows, and integrate them into campaign process;
· Measure and track outcomes;
· Create leadership opportunities in each state for directly impacted members that promote skill development and ownership of the project;
· Identify and cultivate leadership in allied organizations and networks;
· Assist in leading direct action;
· Meaningful engagement with community-driven policy reform and a willingness to engage diverse partners;
· Track legislative progress and mobilization outcomes for all states.
Qualifications
· Previous experience in community organizing and a demonstrated commitment to activism and mobilizing communities required;
· Experience cultivating others’ leadership ability and building coalitions from the grassroots;
· Experience working on coalition-based campaign(s) to effect legislative and policy change;
· A basic familiarity with national trends in criminal justice reform;
· Understanding of the role collateral consequences play in driving cycles of mass incarceration and over-criminalization;
· Basic computer skills.
