Lukumi Arts ­ Mercedita Valdes Internship

Lukumi Arts is a growing 8­year old artistic collective, rooted in Afro­Cuban expression, that creates theater, concerts, installation and performance art on the violence, trauma, healing and joy embodied in the Afro­Atlantic experience. We create our artistic work through thoughtful collaborations and partnerships, innovative modes and forms of expression, and educational outreach and activism throughout the Afro­Atlantic with special focus on New York, Miami, Cuba and the West Indies.

Mercedita Valdes Internship ~ This position is named for the legendary Afro­Cuban singer, actor and performer Mercedita Valdes Granit (September 24, 1922 – June 13, 1996), as we want the spirit of this work to be surrounded by and deeply rooted in love, joy, celebration, beauty and charity.

Internship Description:​ We are looking for someone with positive, great energy, who is respectful of both themselves and others, who understands how to navigate celebratory and challenging moments with grace; deeply invested in community social change; deeply rooted in pedagogy, history and cultures of the African Diaspora; a deep interest in artistic advocacy, and in new models for artists to support one another and thrive outside of education and non­profit industrial complex; a passion to work and nurture young people of color in Brooklyn; highly organized and effective; creative and visionary who understands collaborations and how to work with a diverse range of beings, artists, institutions and community activists & residents.


● Engage our community via Social Media
● Coordinate our mailing list
● Create graphics/images for Lukumi Arts events
● Assist in coordinating large events
● Assist in communicating with partners for our programming
● Scheduling performers/spaces
● Working in a Stage Manager and/or Coordinator role for performances and events
● Basic Documentation of events


● Bilingual in Spanish/English is required (this includes writing)​, ​fluency in Brazilian
Portuguese, Haitian Kreyol, French, Fon, Yoruba is highly encouraged

● Arts administration training
● Advanced writing and editing skills
● Basic to advanced background in Visual­Graphic Design­Photography
● Experience working with artists and/or theater, gallery and similar spaces
● Community organizing and/or activist experience
● Working knowledge of conflict resolution and/or de­escalation tactics
● Teaching experience and/or experience working with youth
● A clear, detailed and highly organized communicator and worker
● Up to date with news, politics and cultural happenings throughout the African Diaspora
● Genuinely enjoys/appreciates music, performance, art

This is a *paid* internship, we will pay through a stipend and hourly for events, tech rehearsals and long work days. We hope to fill this position by October 15th, 2016.
