The Waterfront Alliance is an alliance of more than 900 organizations with ties to our regional waterways. Together we are working to transform the waters of the New York and New Jersey harbor and waterfront into clean and accessible places to live, work, and play, with inviting parks, dependable jobs, and reliable, eco-friendly transportation for all. Our mission is to protect, transform, and revitalize our harbor and waterfront. As we prepare to commemorate our 10th anniversary as an independent civic organization, we will for first time create a harbor-wide assessment—a report card—of how well our harbor is performing, and what needs the most improvement.

We seek a policy and research intern to assist in the research and preparation of that report card, which will measure:

An OPEN Harbor: How many communities in our region allow for real connections to the water—defined as the ability to get from the water to the land and the land to the water for vessels of many varieties—for active engagement at the shoreline for education and recreation?
A HEALTHY Harbor: How clean are our waterways, and how much progress are we making toward minimizing billions of gallons of stormwater and combined sewer discharges? What ecological and social benefits can our restoration goals provide?
A STRONG Harbor: How prepared are we for climate change, with more intense storms and sea level rise projected for the next century? How many lives and vital systems, and how much economic activity, will be protected from the next 100-year storm given current plans and projects?

This position offers an enriching and rewarding opportunity to work with a small and dedicated team to convey in clear and concise terms what opportunities and challenges our harbor and waterways pose for the coming decades.

The position requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week (we will work with the candidate to establish a regular schedule) and at least a three month commitment, with option to extend. This is an ideal position for an undergraduate or graduate student who can commit to a semester or a recent graduate looking to gain more experience. A modest stipend is provided to help defray transportation and other costs.
