TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, Center for Performance Research

Oversees all aspects of Production at CPR from start to finish. CPR’s TD maintains technical inventory, runs lighting, sound and projections during technical rehearsals and performances, collaborates with artists on design choices via email prior to events, and is responsible for maintenance to the technical equipment and studio theater. Works in close collaboration with CPR artists, event management, and reports to General Manager. Approximately 45 hours of work a month, mainly between the hours of 6 PM – 10 PM on weekend nights.

Collaboration with artists

• Collect renter and performer’s Tech Info forms
• Read over the technical needs for each show in advance, and speak with performer about design choices and potential red flags
• Oversee artists’ collaborators use of CPR equipment, serve as designer as needed
• Program the ION lighting console during technical rehearsals, and run it during the show
• Orients facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations; facilitates the use of the technical facilities by the resident company and others engaged by or renting the facility.
• Work closely with the Event Manager to set up audience, and anticipate house count and seating needs. Communicate about start time with the artists.
• Set up and run wide-shot camera recording in the booth of each performance, return camera to the Event Manager each night.
Maintenance of the Space

During Programs:

• Maintain the integrity of the space, and ensures no damage comes to it during rehearsals and performances
• Turn on and shut down the theater at each performance
• Maintenance of the Marley Floor – sweep the Marley before and after each show, with a full clean / wet mopping if necessary. Also, ensure no scuffs, spills, or other damage is made to the floor during performances
• Direct the flipping of the dance floor, if an artist requests it, between black and white.
• Maintain the track lighting in the small studio and House lighting. Replace bulbs if needed, and refocus the small studio track lighting for gallery exhibitions.
• Maintain the lighting system. Replace bulbs in source 4 instruments as they burn out. Maintain the rep lighting plot. During technical rehearsals, focus and gel lights as needed, and restore them to the rep plot during strike.
• Maintain the sound system – do a speaker check for every performance, and fix any issues.
Additional Projects:
• Schedule monthly maintenance hours (4 total, additional at General Manager’s approval) by reviewing the studio calendars and requesting space from the General Manager.
• Maintain orderly and clean storage areas, including CPR’s basement storage
• Identify and prioritize short term and long term maintenance needs
• Maintain open communication with General Manager about space needs and request large project approval

• Maintain and update Master Inventory List as needed
• Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment
• Assist with the preparation and control of production budgets
• Make recommendations to the General Manager regarding capital purchases of technical equipment
• Assist in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows
• Keep up to date on the rental schedule via the TD Google calendar
• Check TD email 3-4 days a week to remain up-to-date on CPR issues
• Keep accurate time card via ADP pay system
• Maintain regular and open email communication with the General Manage
