Midtown International Theatre Festival Seeking Non Equity actors for casting in Off-Off Broadway run.

Captive Barbies has been accepted into the general program of this summer's Midtown International Theatre Festival (, running 7/13-8/2 (our performance dates TBD but after July 26.) Show location: The Elektra Theatre, in the Times Square Arts Center.

Captive Barbies, a dark comedy, meditates on maleness, masculinity, and conflicts with normativity faced within the gay culture that is more relevant than ever before. As queer populations become more accepted into normative spaces, they must still struggle with being essentially abnormal. Captive Barbies explores the gray space in queer identity that exists between normal vs. abnormal, accepted vs. rejected, and real vs. absurd.

Lee: Early to mid 20’s. The driving force of action within the show, Lee is a fiery personality that chooses to live in his own reality. While he currently lives a life split between occasional prostitution and drag, he does not identify as a prostitute by any means. Though he is a flamboyant gay man, he takes his assertiveness very seriously while he controls the other characters within the play like his pawns. Constantly serving mixtures between lies and truth, he likes to both instigate and reveal drama. Has a childhood friendship with Larry for which he resents him though we never know the whole story behind their relationship.

Larry: Early to mid 20’s. A closeted cop that is highly defensive of his masculinity and his emotions. He operates in defense--constantly making sure not to reveal too much of himself or his sensitivity. Has a gruff voice that matches his bulky body and gains self-esteem from being the alpha dog in relationships.

Mitchell: Early thirties. A very dramatic social worker that constantly brings his work home with him. While he tries to handle everything with sensitivity and political correctness, he has a strong inability to think outside of himself, which leads to interpersonal drama and resentment from other characters. Cute, effeminate, and over-dramatic, he is both loveable and hateable. In a seven-year-long relationship with Darrell and is in the process of adopting a child.

Darrell: Early thirties. An average man with a soft disposition. Because of Mitchell’s controlling nature, he is ready to erupt by the opening of the play and disregard Mitchell’s control. He fears that having a child with Mitchell would bring a lifetime of being controlled. As an outlet for his frustration, he is having an affair with Larry.

Mike: Early to mid twenties. A very muscular man that serves as a mixture between a boyfriend and a semi-pimp for Lee. He is not the brightest of men and is in many ways Lee’s muscled lap dog. His sincerity and innocence, however, make him quite loveable in a play filled with insincere characters always performing lies for each other.

Murder. Mystery. Mayhem. Musical Comedy. Milo has a show…and needs a break.

Milo (Bari-tenor, Low A – High G): A down and out writer that dreams of getting his newest musical on Broadway.

Detective William H. Finley (Tenor, Low A – High D): A struggling detective hired to solve the murder of Johnny “Goodboots” McGillycuddy.

Nicki/Josephine Rose (Mezzo/Belter, Low G – High D): Milo’s best friend and a Broadway hopeful/The headlining diva of Songbird Sally’s and the secret girlfriend of Johnny “Goodboots” McGillycuddy. Think Rita Hayworth.

Geraldine “Bootsie” Burney (Soprano, Low B – High D [above the staff]): The girlfriend of Lenny “The Face” Swanson. She’s a cocktail waitress, and hopeful perfomer, at Songbird Sally’s. She’s completely unstable and definitely not the brightest, but there’s more than meets the eye. Very Betty Boop.

Mr. Minn/Lenny ‘The Face’ Swanson (Tenor, Low B – High B): A Chinese food delivery man/The partner of Johnny “Goodboots” McGillycuddy. A tough guy exterior, but really a good guy underneath that cares about nothing else but his girl, Bootsie. [Asian actors will only be considered for this role]

Victoria Ann Razner McGillycuddy (Alto, Low G – Mid B): The booze-hound wife of the deceased, Johnny “Goodboots” McGillycuddy. She’s the proprietor of Songbird Sally’s, a nightclub known for shady dealings and even shadier characters. She’s definitely a functioning alcoholic.

Seeking teenage collaborators to create and present "PROJECTQUEST: PIMA," the culminating performance of a free, interdisciplinary-arts program for NYC teens.

Working together since November, the group is ready to welcome more teenagers to help create and perform in this exploration of the group's questions about life and society. Teens of all levels of experience in the arts are welcome. The performance combines visual art, music, theatre, dance, and technology to create a participatory journey for the audience. Teen artists will collaborate with professional artists to make this piece.

Participants do not need to have expertise or extensive experience in the arts; the most important qualities are a passion to create, collaborate, and learn, an interest in working with peers of different backgrounds, and a sense of commitment to finish what they start. Because "PROJECTQUEST" provides opportunities for teens to develop skills they might not have, primarily through working closely with professionals in the field, we welcome young artists who are interested in any variety of creative practices to join this performance-in-the-making; experienced young artists are of course also welcome.

A free, arts-education program for NYC teenagers, PROJECTQUEST:PIMA is co-sponsored by Brooklyn College Collaborative Media Group and Technical Artisans Collective and created and led by artist/educators Jeremy Goren and Kim Guzowski.
