Here’s the premise: If you were paying rent and utilities at a brick and mortar location somewhere, you’d totally resign yourself to the fact that you must promote it regularly by running expensive ads created for a newspaper or magazine, and possibly creating, printing up, and mailing postcards or direct mail pieces to supplement those ads. Why? Because that is what has always been known to work. And with all this, there’d still be a variety of other out of pocket costs that would surely crop up here and there, all with the express purpose of letting the public at large know who and where you are. Even if you ruled out using the broadcast media because it’s too pricey for you, print is still an expensive undertaking that requires you maintain a hefty advertising budget. Yet all the while you must accept the distinct possibility that it all might still take a very long time to catch on.

So what made you think that you could just put up a website on the internet and customers would come running? If people don’t know you’re there, and your site doesn’t come up when someone does a search in your product category, then the result can be nothing but anonymity. And as you read this, you know all too well what that feeling can be like.

The question now is this: What can you do that’s not as expensive as creating and running ads, printings, mailings, and the like while still being able to generate the volume of customers on the internet that you’re looking for? After all, this is your livelihood moving forward; what are you willing to invest in its success?
