Educational Non-Profit Org Seeks Tutors - Legal Outreach (Long Island City, NY)
Who we are: Legal Outreach is a non-profit that prepares urban youth from underserved communities to compete at high academic levels. We are seeking tutors for our After School Study Center.
The After School Study Center: This program is a crucial part of the organization's goal of placing disadvantaged students in top universities. Students in the After School Study Center range in age from 14 to 17, and they attend general and specialized high schools throughout the five boroughs. Any student with a core academic average lower than 85 must come to tutoring.
Job description: Each tutor is responsible for overseeing, coaching, and tracking a group of 12 to 15 students. Each tutor must be able to work one-on-one with students as well as command the entire group.
Oversight: A core responsibility of the position is to ensure that we provide a quiet space that is conducive to studying, with the goal that students will develop and internalize good studying habits that will enable their academic success.
Coaching: Tutors are not students' friends; they are there for the important work of helping our students become better students. That said, tutors should seek to motivate students to do better. Students' curricula vary, and their tutors will need to adapt to each individual's needs.
Tracking: A tutor is expected to record, report and respond to information on students' attendance, grades, study skills, and other academic issues.
Required qualities and skills:
- Strong college and high school students with excellence in science or a general command of classroom management
- Strong verbal communications skills
- Patience, maturity, and a sense of humor
Preferred qualities and skills:
- Experience working with adolescents and the ability to connect with them
- Ability to tutor multiple subjects
- Classroom-management or leadership skills and experience
- Energy, enthusiasm, and passion for our cause
Hours: 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.; Monday – Thursday; at least 3 days per week
Start Date: No later than January 28th
Pay: $12+/hour, commensurate with experience and demonstrated abilities
Where: Legal Outreach is located at 36-14 35th Street in Long Island City, Queens. You can take the N/Q to 36th Ave. or the M/R to 36th St. (12 – 15 min from midtown Manhattan)
