English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher, Uptown Harlem Gems - Harlem Children's Zone (New York, NY)

We are seeking a part-time English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher, to incorporate direct instruction, while infusing the preschool curriculum for school readiness success. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Gems UPK, an understanding and respect for the culture of all residents of Harlem, and experience working in a school setting that fosters a love for children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administer tests and language assessments under the guidance of a classroom teacher to evaluate students' language ability
  • Create individualized service plans and schedules for each ELL student
  • Provide ELL services and academic enrichment to students based on service plans
  • Assess ELL students' progress and goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration
  • Model appropriate English communication to develop students' ability to communicate effectively in the English language
  • Observe and provide guidance to teachers on differentiating for ELL students
  • Maintain relationships and communicate with families about student progress
  • Participate effectively and collegially in department meetings and parent meetings
  • Ensure compliance with all pertinent English Language Learner laws and policies
  • Provide a nurturing environment and model positive behavior for students
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualification, Skill and Knowledge Requirements

  • A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
  • Master's degree with at least 2 years ELL/ESL teaching experience is required
  • Previous early childhood classroom experience; preferably in an urban setting
  • Must have New York State Certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth – Grade 2), Childhood Education (Grades 1 – 6), and/or ESL (Grades K – 12)
  • Knowledge and understanding of curriculum
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in African dialect languages (Twi, Fante, Fulani, Mandinka, Woloof, and/or Bamanakan)
  • Must be available mornings 8:00am to 12:00pm or afternoons 2:00pm to 6:00pm
