Harlem RBI is seeking dynamic individuals to serve as Reading Workshop Teachers at REAL Kids, an award-winning non-traditional
after-school enrichment program for boys and girls in K-5th grades in East Harlem and the South Bronx. The program offers a unique and
supportive environment focused on enhancing interest in and appreciation for reading and learning, while improving life skills in nutrition
and fitness, critical thinking and communication, teambuilding and leadership.

Teachers are responsible for leading a daily reading workshop for K-5th grade youth as well as assisting Learning Coaches (college
students employed as youth workers) to facilitate learning activities. REAL Kids Reading Workshop Teachers lead trainings for staff and
develop sustainable curriculum materials for the REAL Kids Workshop program. The REAL Kids Workshop features grade appropriate
activities such as read-alouds, centers, guided reading, book clubs (or literature circles) and creative reading response activities. The
program offers teachers a supportive environment that fosters creativity and innovation. Class sizes are small (maximum of 18 youth) and
teachers are supported for Learning Coaches.

Roles and Responsibilities:
• Curriculum development: Develop a scope and sequence (Harlem RBI Cycle Map) and seek out exciting curricular materials
appropriate for a variety of academic levels and interests;
• Teaching: Plan and deliver literacy lessons to a variety of levels that includes an active role for two Learning Coaches and hands
on activities for youth;
• Assessment:
-Set founding goals for each small instructional group;
-Implement an ongoing informal assessment system;
-Measure and report youth progress toward formative data;
• Mentorship: Meet regularly with Learning Coaches to provide weekly lesson plans, feedback on practice and ongoing
instructional support.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree and at least enrollment of graduate level education courses; Master's Degree preferred;
• 2 years of classroom experience, such as student teacher or substitute teaching;
• State or city teaching certification, preferred;
• Demonstrated success in teaching reading in an elementary setting;
• Experience managing or mentoring college students or other junior staff;
• Understanding of child development as it relates to literacy;
• Ability to take initiative and maintain flexibility;
• NOTE: Special Education expertise and/or knowledge of Spanish is helpful, though not required.

Hours
The REAL Kids program will operate from October 11 to late May, and begins with a 2-evening training and collaborative planning
institute during the first week of October. Teachers work 2-4 days per week as follows:
• Half-hour Professional Development meeting with the Education Specialist after program once a week;
• Half-hour mentoring and collaborative planning session after program one evening a week;
• 2-4 two-hour teaching days (approximately 4pm to 6pm), Monday-Thursday;
• Additional opportunities to serve on Harlem RBI committees.

Compensation
The program offers a highly competitive hourly salary.
