Fahari Academy Charter School is an independently operated charter school unaffiliated with a foundation or charter management organization. Founded in 2009 as a college preparatory academy, Fahari has grown to serve 320 students in grades 5 through 8 in the 2012-2013 school year. At maturity, we promise to be an innovative model serving students in grades 5 through 12 in the Flatbush community in Brooklyn, NY. The mission of Fahari Academy Charter School is to educate, support, challenge, and train scholars, in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood, for success in college and beyond.OUR CORE VALUESFahari is the Swahili word for Pride. In our culture of mutual accountability every member of the Fahari Academy community enforces and espouses the character values of Perseverance, Respect, Independence, Discipline, Excellence or P.R.I.D.E. ASPECTS OF THE INNOVATIVE MODEL:Fahari Academy promises a progressive college preparatory academic model that balances the skill and standards based mastery with a gradually increased applied and practicum based learning environment. Fahari Academy offers a 190 day school year for students with a trimester academic cycle. Students in fifth grade begin with conventional instruction followed by one week of practicum and applied learning within each trimester. As students progress, the practicum and applied learning time increases. The staff at Fahari is highly professional, union organized, outcome focused and a team that embraces and are hungry for on-going development.The board and support systems for school leadership consist of highly experienced professionals including trustees, consultants, and staff with decades spent in the non-profit, education reform, legal and financial sector. MOST NOTABLE:Students that remain at Fahari exceed expected goals for student achievement. The current eighth grade class ranks among the highest performing charter schools in the city in proficiency on the state Math and ELA assessments. We believe that all students should be ready to succeed in college at the end of the Fahari education. â¢Setting creative and executive direction for a school that is both young and agile enough to make adjustments and identify, develop, and transfer best practicesâ¢Influence over the academic direction, hiring and staff development that will enable the school to achieve not just high academic achievement, but unique student outcomes.â¢Entering into a solid foundation, but not an entrenched organizational bureaucracy where creative and systemic change can be a challenge.EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A FAHARI LEADERâ¢Provide creative and visionary guidance in implementing and building out a rigorous, progressively progressive academic programâ¢Manage the day to day educational program at the schoolâ¢Determine optimal staffing model and deployments of instructional staff and consultantâ¢Identify, recruit, support, develop and supervise all instructional staffâ¢Plan and oversee all instructional professional development and collaborate with culture and operational leadership to implement all components of professional developmentâ¢Report to the Board of Trustees on the program and academic progress of studentsâ¢Research, design, and/or supplement the academic curriculum for all subjects and grades based on successful models and approaches â¢Ensure and monitor alignment of the academic curriculum with National Common Core Standards and other data-based benchmarks such that graduating students will be college readyâ¢Monitor student progress and ensure effectivenessâ¢Design and implementation of systems to assess student achievementâ¢Generate and manage standardized test and internal assessment schedules, logistics, and reportingâ¢Prepare academic accountability reports for charter authorizer as well as local, state and federal agenciesâ¢Evaluate, approve, and purchase curricular materials such as textbooksâ¢Observe and coach educators dailyâ¢Evaluate all instructional staff; manage human resources needs including new applicant screening, tracking actual salary and benefit offers and contract acceptances against the approved budget, ensuring human resources policies and procedures are implemented for instructional staff â¢Onboard and orient staff members in Fahari Academyâs curricular systems and key pedagogical elementsâ¢Help educators to develop instructional strategies and intervention programs that elevate achievement for struggling studentsâ¢Collaborate with the Executive Director, Director of Academic Intervention Services, and other school staff to maximize the ability of Fahari Academy to support studentsâ academic and socio-emotional developmentâ¢Performs other related duties as requiredâ¢Develop the instructional program budget and collaborate with the executive director, board of trustees, and operations and school culture leadership in developing the annual budget
