Teaching Fellow School Term 2012-2013Location:Bronx ZooJob Type:Volunteers and InternsFLSA:Non-exemptDate:04-04-2012Job Description:Job Description -:Position lasts for 40 weeks - Sept 4, 2012 ' June 9, 2013Start date: Tuesday, Sept 4th, 2012End date: Sunday, June 9, 2013Reports to: Teaching Fellow Coordinator; Programs Coordinator of Education; Curator of Education'Supervised by: Teaching Fellow Coordinator; Programs Coordinator of EducationPosition Objective: To assist Bronx Zoo Education staff in the operation of on-site school and weekend programs for children between the ages of 4 to 18.Primary Responsibilities:1. Assist full-time instructional staff with the teaching of Bronx Zoo school programs.2. Assist full-time instructional staff with the development and/or revisions of lesson plans and program materials.3. Train in the proper handling and presentation protocols of the Bronx Zoo's tractable animal collection under the supervision of the Education Department's Collection Manager.4. Assist full time staff with the facilitation of weekend programs including Family Overnights and birthday parties, as needed.5. Complete office tasks and other assignments as needed.Experience:Qualifications:Position is open to college students, graduate students and recent graduates. Candidates should have a strong academic background in one or more of the following areas: biology, zoology, ecology, environmental science, education, or a related field. Applicants should have previous experience working with children, have excellent communication skills and be able to interpret wildlife science concepts in both a classroom setting and at zoo exhibits. Interests in teaching children and wildlife conservation are essential. Candidates must be comfortable in being trained on how to handle and present tractable animals, used for in-class presentations. Candidates must be available to work four weekdays from 9am to 2:30pm for all 40 weeks of the fellowship and have a valid driver's license. Bilingual/Spanish is a plus.EOE, M/F/D/V
