Position: Visual Arts Teacher – Middle School

The School

Launch Expeditionary Learning Charter School is part of a network of 11 Expeditionary Learning (EL) schools in New York City and is the NYC network's first charter school. EL is a proven educational model being implemented in over 150 district, charter and independent schools across the country. Expeditionary Learning balances both academic rigor and character development through experiential, project-based learning. Launch is seeking a middle school Art teacher to join a highly motivated, curious, intelligent, and passionate staff of educators.

Position

A Visual Arts teacher will work with fellow teachers and Launch staff to develop and implement an innovative curriculum to Launch's 6th and 7th grade students. All teachers and staff will receive extensive professional development and ongoing support in the Expeditionary Learning model. "Learning Expeditions" are in-depth, cross-curricular studies that are project-based, incorporate fieldwork and are relevant in students' lives. Expeditions are the primary way of organizing the curriculum and address common core standards. Staff will work to develop the curriculum and be supported in planning and implementation by a dedicated coach known as an Instructional Guide. Teachers will have ample opportunities to take on leadership roles within the organization as lead teachers, mentors and leaders of study groups that will drive school-wide growth and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four sections of Visual Art
  • Incorporate a variety of mediums and techniques
  • Integrate visual arts learning targets into all Expeditions
  • Work with fellow teachers to plan interdisciplinary Learning Expeditions
  • Develop short-term and long-term learning targets derived from Common Core Standards
  • Help develop and teach habits of mind and habits of heart
  • Develop character by integrating character-building into Learning Expeditions
  • Differentiate instruction so that all students achieve mastery of learning targets
  • Plan lessons for and lead a daily small Advisory (called Crew)
  • Develop classroom structures to ensure all students are known well
  • Develop relationships and consistently communicate with students' families
  • Establish and maintain consistent classroom routines in a student-centered classroom
  • Incorporate literacy into all units of instruction
  • Prepare students to publicly present and exhibit their work, including at least one annual school-wide Exhibition of student work to be presented to parents and the community
  • Prepare students to lead Student-Led Conferences two times each year
  • Prepare students for Presentations of Learning in the Spring of each year
  • Establish a culture of craftsmanship in the classroom
  • Consistently use formative assessments to drive instruction
  • Use the school-wide data system to collect and analyze student data and modify instruction accordingly

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience preferred, but not required OR extensive experience as a professional artist
  • Middle school experience preferred, but not required
  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred)
  • Urban teaching experience or other similar experience in an urban setting
  • Belief that all students can learn and achieve at high levels
  • Desire to work in a teacher-driven, student-centered environment
  • Curiosity about the world and passion to engage kids in meaningful and authentic learning experiences
  • Ability to work well with colleagues and to plan interdisciplinary units
  • Ability to communicate effectively and often with parents and families
  • Valid State Certification preferred but not required to apply
  • Belief in the Expeditionary Learning model and Launch values
