THE YOUTH FARM is an education-focused production farm in Brooklyn that offers New Yorkers opportunities to increase their knowledge of the food system and build high level organic growing skills to share with their communities. The Youth Farm Veg Production Co-Farm Manager (VFM) works as part of a team of independent consultants to manage educational programs and farm production at The Youth Farm. Wearing two hats simultaneously, the VFM is both a popular education facilitator, and a production manager.

The VFM is responsible for preparing the farm’s vegetable crop plan (beginning fall 2018), ensuring the growth of culturally relevant crops that generate a substantial portion to the Youth Farm’s overall income. The VFM works with the Flower Production Co-Farm Manager to plan and implement farm management practices that are sustainable, replicable on a small/low-cost scale, and that encourage healthy and happy soil and community life.

The VFM co-facilitates the Farm Intensive Certificate in Urban Agriculture (FIC), a 7 month intensive urban farming certificate program in partnership with Farm School NYC, co-teaching on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, April - November with the FFM. The VFM prepares and leads 30% of FIC workshops (Mondays) and 90% of Farm Walks (Fridays).

The VFM leads Thursday intern days during the growing season, with support from a Crew Leader.

The VFM is responsible for coordinating the farm’s CSA program, and managing the Youth Farm's farmers market.

Responsibilities - General:
Work with fellow staff to help set Youth Farm budget
Attend and share facilitation of weekly staff meetings
Handle inventory and ordering of most farm supplies
Early season watering, March-May
Help plan, support and attend project fundraisers
Maintain good communication with Flower Farm Manager, Crew Leaders and Director of Youth Programming
Assist farm with social media with regular posts
Have working knowledge of Green Guerillas, HSPS, Youth Farm and Farm School NYC policies and handbooks (Orientation will cover!)
Uphold and co-create ongoing plan for equity internally with other YF consultants

Responsibilities - Veggie Production:
Perform outreach, manage registrations, organize deliveries for CSA program; handle communications with members and pick-up site locations
Write 25% of “From the Farmer” blurb in CSA Newsletters
Manage and co-facilitate Internship program
Help encourage consistent, legible and detailed farm record keeping forms
Co lead Orientation days for Interns, Crew Leaders, and FIC
Co lead 2 introductory sessions for FIC crew on the farm (March)
April-November: Co-lead FIC Program Wednesdays and Fridays; Teach 30% of FIC Monday workshops and lead 90% of Friday farm walks; plan on three days for FIC for first and last weeks
Plan and coordinate 4-5 off-farm field trips for FIC
Support FFM in preparation for application/onboarding for FIC
Set fair prices for Youth Farm produce sold direct through the market
Provide ideas or work with DYP on market outreach and promotion
Model and build good relations with all market customers
Coordinate with DYP for youth-led cooking demos at the market
Developing and improving market protocols for efficiency, quality, and harmony
Place weekly purchases of complimentary produce through Greenmarket Co. and pursue other potential vendors
Weekly market record keeping
Act as liaison with NY Cares and assist with management of other farm partners
Lead planning and coordination of October FIC Career Panel
Attend meetings and calls with Farm School NYC to discuss FIC as needed

Strong desire to continue in the path of production farm management and farm training/education
At least 2 years experience in farm management; crop planning experience for production strongly preferred
At least 1 year experience teaching diverse adults: workshop planning and facilitation, curriculum writing, and assessment creation
1-2 years experience direct marketing fresh vegetables and flowers, through diverse streams including CSA, Farmers Market and Restaurants
Wide ranging/holistic skill set in sustainable agriculture
Self-starter and comfortable/able to lead people and work independently on site
Welcoming nature and adept at balancing farm management/production goals within a community-oriented space
Strong desire to expand food and social justice
Responsible, reliable, prompt, motivated, and has a sense of humor
Excellent communication skills
Working knowledge of Google Drive and knows basics of using Excel for budgeting and crop planning
Ability and knowledge of maintaining personal finances

Additional/Preferred Skills:
Detail oriented and organized
Undoing Racism training or similar experience
Knowledge or experience with Popular Education theories of learning
Training of Trainers certification
Conflict resolution training
Experience managing a CSA membership or managing a farmers market a major plus
Familiarity with hand tools and light power equipment

Average of 28 hours/week for 45 weeks, fluctuates seasonally. This position is paid hourly, and includes a CSA Share. Vacation dates are flexible and can be coordinated with FFM for coverage of responsibilities.
