The finger holes are small - 7.3mm, 8.1mm, 7mm, 7.75mm, 8.1mm, 5.5mm from the top down. The beautifully cut embouchure ( see photo ) is 11.73mm x 10.55mm.

The diameter of the head at embouchure is 27mm.

The flute is overall very elegant and slender. It is 26mm just where the left hand grips the upper middle joint, making it supremely comfortable to play.

The flute is in excellent original condition. There is a small (40mm) crack on the back of the head at the top which has been professionally repaired ( by me). Apart from that the flute is as it came from Covent Garden, there are no other cracks, replaced blocks, or other repair work old or modern. All springs are original., and the flute has been repadded with modern brown leather pads.

This is a very early example from the Rudall & Rose workshop, and I believe it is the earliest to come on the market for some considerable time. The number indicates a date of manufacture of 1828.

As an example of a very early, small holed, Rudall & Rose I have to say that this is without doubt the finest that has passed through my hands in over 30 years and some hundreds of Rudalls.

As a playing instrument it is a delight, and being an early small-holed flute plays much more easily in modern pitch than many later examples. To my embouchure, it plays at A=440 with the slide extended 12.5 mm, whereas many of the large-holed later instruments are impossible to play at modern pitch.

The foot joint keys ( without any adjustment by me) are among the most reliable and best adjusted I’ve had the pleasure to play, and the low C just pops out effortlessly.

I believe this flute to have been very little used. The crispness of the stamp, as seen in the photo, and the general condition of the flute after 186 years are a good indication of this. It is in the original case, which predates the labelled and signed cases more commonly associated with Rudall and Rose.
