If you need help preparing for an audition, expanding your repertoire, learning about vocal health and technique, or just want to sing for fun then my lessons are for you!

I am a faculty member of the New York Jazz Academy, I teach lessons at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, I have taught clinics and master classes at Susquehanna University and I give private lessons out of my home in Queens. I can also travel to students' homes if it is reachable by subway.

My lessons are individually planned to cater to the student's needs. We usually start with basic vocal technique (breathing techniques, vocal exercises for strength and vocal health) and then after a good foundation of technique has been set the lessons can focus on any or all of the following:
- Vocal technique for Jazz, R&B and Pop singers,
- Exercises needed for jazz singing and improvisation,
- Basic music theory,
- Help with building repertoire,
- Applying vocal exercises to your own music!

The technique I teach incorporates various exercises to relax the much acquired tension that we all hold in our necks, face and shoulders, which affects our vocal abilities. The technique loosens the back of the tongue to allow for a larger range, accurate singing of pitches, and general healthy sound.

Aside from vocal technique, these vocal lessons can also help with choosing proper repertoire for a specific audition or event as well as working on original material written by the student.

A little information about me:
Thana Alexa is a graduate of the New School University where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz and Contemporary Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Thana studied for many years with renowned speech therapist and vocal coach, Kate Baker, and has learned many techniques necessary for the growth and strength of vocal development as well as for vocal health and care.

Thana Alexa is a unique vocalist. Her compositions and arrangements, in which she regularly uses the voice as an instrument, bring together elements of jazz, pop and rock, making her popular among both listeners and players. She has performed in some of the most respected venues in New York, including Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Tony Bennet Performance Hall, among others. She has also performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada and the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Israel.

Thana has had the opportunity to record with legendary drummer Antonio Sanchez (known for being a member of the Pat Metheny Group) on his upcoming album "New Life", Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (known for his work with Aretha Franklin and James Brown among others), and has performed with renowned musicians such as Lenny White - known for his work with Chick Corea - Buster Williams - a Miles Davis alumnus - and George Colligan - known for his work with Cassandra Wilson. Thana has also composed for and performed with the Vienna based HGM Big Band led by Zigi Feigl.

In July 2010 "Siena", one of Thana's original compositions, was nominated by the Croatian Music Academy, PORIN, for Best Jazz Composition, which appeared on the album nominated for Best Jazz Album. This nomination was an enormous honor given that these awards are considered the country's equivalent of the Grammy.

In August 2011 Thana won the Jazzon Alpe-Adria International Competition for Composers for her composition, "Ode to Heroes". Thana's debut album, "Ode to Heroes" will be released in 2014 and includes world-renowned musicians Antonio Sanchez, Donny McCaslin, Scott Colley, Jorge Roeder, Sergio Salvatore and others.
