Change a haircut and you change a woman — at least that’s the case if you’re Nuriel Abramov. Once upon a time the Numi co-owner and senior stylist gave a chic new style to a woman with a formerly boxy cut — and taking a cue from her new look, she unleashed her inner fashionista. “She began dressing differently,” says Abramov. “I love giving confidence back to a woman. If a woman doesn’t like the way she looks, she doesn’t like the way she feels. Give her the right cut and right away, everything changes.”
For years, Abramov’s tapped into his transformative powers at New York City’s exclusive Kim LePine and Rosario Acquista salons. Along with glamorizing Manhattan’s most elite residents, his training included primping reality TV stars for shows like America’s Top Model, and stylizing celebrities during fashion shoots for InStyle and Allure. While working at Static Salon in White Plains, where he met co-owner Gabriel Abrams, he saw a real demand in Westchester for New York City-caliber services. “I wanted to give Westchester women something that’s fresh and new,” he says, “an upscale salon, where you can always count on great service and an excellent haircut. We’re small, cozy, elegant and friendly. We’re very boutiquey. ”
An upscale atmosphere and friendly service may be a recipe for success, but don’t forget the main ingredient—a terrific haircut. And that’s the real reason to book Abramov: He knows hair. Your hair. Your sister’s hair. Your best friend’s hair. In fact, he’s committed to educating you about it. “I tell my clients what will work for them and what will not. Most of my cuts are wash-and-go,” he says. “I specialize in building volume on fine hair, chic bobs, and short hair. I help make the most of a woman’s natural beauty.” And of course, that includes cutting-edge treatments like Brazilian Blowouts and Keratin hair smoothing, which Abramov performs himself. Think your ready to love your hair — and feel great about how you look overall? Hop into Ambrov’s chair and let the magic begin.
The senior stylist and co-founder of Numi Salon worked his way up the styling ladder at the renowned New York City-based John Frieda and Warren-Tricomi salons, where he often tamed celebrity tresses. Thanks to his prestigious training, he’s able to “take big hair ideas and put them into a small salon with great service,” he says. “I took a piece of everything that worked in other salons and created a unique brand right here.”
Catering to the whole person — not just a head of hair — is what Numi is all about. And in Abrams’ chair that starts with his rare ability to see things in women they often fail to see in themselves. “Every cut starts with a vision,” says Abrams. “Nobody wants to come in and think, OK, that’s it.”
His secret to great hair is great shape, which comes from the cut. “I’m more of a cutter than a stylist; I enjoy creating shape. It makes the cut last longer.”
Abrams specializes in long, layered cuts, so it’s no surprise he’s a favorite of women under 40. “I believe in less-is-more—less handling, less blow-drying, less fuss for you,” he says. Sit in his chair and the 26 year-old stylist will tell you about the trendiest places to eat in the city, the latest gossip around town, and yes, what it’s like to work on celebrity locks. But while hobnobbing with Oscar winners may be a job perk, according to him, the best part of being a stylist is that you can make everyday women feel terrific.
“A client can come in unhappy with how he or she looks, and I can change that in an hour. I love that,” he laughs.
