Cuttyhunk has long enjoyed its reputation as a fisherman’s paradise, though it is not just for fishermen! Striped bass and blue fish are caught in impressive numbers when the tide is rising. Several charter boat captains will work diligently to see that anglers’ efforts are rewarded. When you’re not fishing, you’ll enjoy long walks amongst the wild flowers, a hike on one of the many beautiful trails out to the island’s West End for some of the best bird watching, a day at the beach, ice cream and a chat on the dock or cool drinks with fresh shellfish on the Avalon porch. If walking isn’t your thing, grab a golf’s the only other acceptable way to travel on the island. The pace is slow, the air is clean and nightlife is limited to stargazing.

The Avalon was built in 1910 by William Wood; a wealthy Massachusetts mill owner. Wood had been snubbed by the Cuttyhunk Fishing Club due to his Portuguese heritage. He preserved and ultimately developed the choicest sites on Cuttyhunk Island for the summertime enjoyment of family, friends and business associates. The Avalon was Wood’s first construction project on Cuttyhunk. It was designed to entertain during summer vacations. After the First World War, the home became a convalescent facility for injured soldiers. Currently, visiting doctors operate a gratis medical clinic in a portion of the house that is separate from the main home and is open to all islanders during our season, which runs May through October.

Guests at the Avalon will find that the historic charm of the home has been preserved in spite of modernizations necessary to ensure the comfort of visitors. There is a billiard room, a large living room with TV and “boat bar,” a dining room that can seat 12 and a large covered porch overlooking Vineyard Sound with the beacon of Gay Head lighthouse blinking on the far horizon. Most guest bedrooms have private baths with claw-foot tubs; shower baths are also available for guests’ use. Twin, full, queen, and king beds are available and some of the larger rooms can easily accommodate couples with children. We have shared cooking facilities for our guests that include a microwave, coffee pots, fridge and a commercial range in the large country kitchen. Full catering can be arranged for larger parties.
